Many people who drive a motorcycle love the freedom it gives them. With that said, there are also several major reasons why driving a motorcycle in Florida can be dangerous. Here’s more information about four common causes of motorcycle accidents and how to avoid them.

1. Opened Car Doors

You might not think you can encounter danger while riding near parked cars. However, it only takes one opened automobile door to potentially send you flying. Avoid this threat by driving as slowly as possible near the side of parked vehicles.

2. Changing Lanes Unsafely

Another way to avoid accidents is by changing lanes safely. It might be easy for your smaller motorcycle to navigate around moving vehicles. However, this behavior is also incredibly risky. When you’re going to change lanes on a motorcycle, always make sure that no automobiles are near you.

3. Drinking and Driving

No matter what kind of vehicle you’re driving, you should never drink alcohol and get in the driver’s seat. Considering their top speeds, motorcycles can be extremely dangerous vehicles to try and drive after getting intoxicated. If you have too much to drink, let a sober driver take you to your chosen destination.

4. Improper Braking

Many motorcycle collisions with other vehicles happen due to improper braking. This can happen on a motorcycle when a driver overuses the rear brakes, causing them and their motorcycle to fall forward. If you need to brake fast, prevent flipping your motorcycle by applying the rear and front brakes evenly.

As you can see, there are several situations when riding a motorcycle can become dangerous. If you were recently injured in an accident that was caused by the negligence of another motorist, contact Burnett Law, P.A. for a free consultation.
